Cordia subcordata, commonly known as Kou, is a striking evergreen tree native to the tropical coastal regions of the Pacific. This species holds cultural significance in many of the islands where it naturally occurs, often valued for its attractive foliage and vibrant flowers. The Kou tree typically grows into a medium-sized tree, reaching heights of 10 to 15 meters, though it can occasionally grow larger. Its form is often spreading and somewhat irregular, providing a pleasing aesthetic in its natural and cultivated settings. The leaves of Cordia subcordata are a prominent feature, being simple, alternate, and ovate to broadly ovate in shape. They measure approximately 10 to 20 centimeters in length and 6 to 12 centimeters in width, with a slightly leathery texture. The leaf margins are entire or shallowly toothed, and the apex is usually acute or acuminate. The upper surface of the leaves is typically dark green and glossy, while the underside is paler and may be slightly hairy. The bark of the Kou tree is generally smooth and grayish-brown when young, becoming rougher and fissured with age. One of the most admired aspects of Cordia subcordata is its beautiful inflorescence. The flowers are borne in terminal or axillary cymes and are trumpet-shaped, measuring about 4 to 6 centimeters in diameter. They possess five prominent, crinkled petals that are a brilliant orange-red to scarlet color, often with a yellow throat. These showy flowers are produced throughout much of the year in suitable climates, attracting pollinators. Following flowering, the plant produces a fruit, which is a small, ovoid drupe, about 1.5 to 2 centimeters long. The fruit is green when immature, turning brown or blackish when ripe, and contains a single seed. Cordia subcordata is naturally distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, found on islands from East Africa to Polynesia, and extending north to Taiwan and south to northern Australia. It thrives in coastal environments, often growing in sandy soils, coral rubble, and along shorelines where it is exposed to salt spray and wind. Its tolerance to saline conditions makes it a valuable component of coastal vegetation. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soils and full sun exposure. While it is a tropical species, it can be grown in subtropical regions with protection from frost. Historically, the wood of Cordia subcordata has been used for various purposes, including carving and construction, due to its lightweight and workable nature. The fibrous bark has also been utilized for cordage. While not a primary food source, the fruits are sometimes consumed by local populations.
