Thyme is highly drought-tolerant and prefers dry conditions. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot, which is a common issue for this herb.

During hot, dry spells, more frequent watering may be necessary, especially for potted plants, but always check soil moisture first. Reduce watering significantly in cooler months or if grown indoors.

Overwatering is the most common cause of thyme failure.

Regular pruning is essential for maintaining a healthy, bushy thyme plant and preventing it from becoming woody and leggy. In early spring, prune back about one-third of the plant to encourage new growth.

After flowering, lightly trim spent blooms and stems to promote a second flush of foliage and maintain shape. Regular harvesting for culinary use also acts as a form of pruning, keeping the plant productive and compact.

Thyme can be easily propagated by seeds, stem cuttings, or division. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.

Take 7-10 cm non-flowering stem cuttings in spring or early summer, remove lower leaves, and root them in moist, well-draining potting mix. Divide mature, established plants in spring or autumn for new plants.

Repot thyme when it becomes root-bound or outgrows its current container, typically every 2-3 years. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one, ensuring it has excellent drainage holes.

Repot in spring, using a well-draining potting mix formulated for herbs or succulents. Gently loosen any circling roots and replant at the same depth to minimize stress.
