Following pollination, the female flowers develop into distinctive, pendulous clusters of small, nut-like fruits enclosed in papery, hop-like bracts. These structures, which give the tree its common name, persist into autumn and can be quite ornamental. The seeds are small and ovoid. Ostrya carpinifolia is found in a variety of natural habitats, often growing in mixed deciduous forests, on rocky slopes, and along stream banks. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of conditions, including calcareous soils. Its native range extends from the Mediterranean region eastward into the Caucasus and Iran. In cultivation, it is adaptable to many soil types and is relatively drought-tolerant once established. It thrives in full sun to partial shade.
