Plant care boils down to a few essentials: water, light, soil, and a bit of attention. Get these right and most houseplants will reward you with growth and greenery.

This guide covers the basics every beginner needs. First step: know what you're growing. Use the ePlant identifier to name your plant, then look up care in our encyclopedia. For deeper dives, see our lighting guide, repotting guide, and yellow leaves guide.

Extension guides from UMD and the RHS align with these fundamentals.

Water

Water when the top inch (or more for large pots) of soil feels dry. Soak until water runs from the drainage hole, then let the soil dry again. Avoid constant wetness and empty saucers after watering. Frequency depends on plant, pot size, and season-the ePlant app can remind you.

Light

Match the plant to your space. Bright indirect (near a window, no direct sun) suits many tropicals; medium light works for pothos and peace lily; low light is only for a few tough species. See our lighting guide for details.

Soil and Pots

Use a well-draining mix suited to the plant (e.g. cactus mix for succulents). Pots must have drainage. Repot when roots fill the pot-usually every 1–2 years. See our repotting guide.

Feeding and Problems

Feed houseplants in the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Watch for yellow leaves, pests, or mold-our yellow leaves and pest guides help. For disease, use ePlant's disease diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I water my houseplants?

There's no single rule-it depends on the plant, pot, and conditions. Check the top of the soil; when it's dry to the touch, water thoroughly. ePlant's care reminders can help you build a routine.
